The Eve of Everything
December 31, 2023
“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.”
Edith Lovejoy Pierce
- Happy New Year's Eve!
The word solstice derives from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Just prior to the northern winter solstice, the apparent path of the sun across the sky has been in decline and the days have gotten shorter. On the solstice, the sun's path remains in the same place on the horizon and the amount of daylight is at its minimum for three days. Then the sun's path begins its ascent in the sky and days grow longer.
Thus the people of many ancient cultures and spiritual traditions celebrated this return of light as a rebirth of the sun and a continuation of life. And it comes as no surprise that January 1 eventually became known as the first day of the New Year!
There is another consideration regarding the special-ness of the eve in New Year’s Eve. The root of the name Eve is Hawwah, or Chava, and means “living one” or “source of life.” In the creation story from the first book of canonical Jewish and Christian scriptures, Eve is the first woman created by God and the mother of all humanity. How fitting it is that humanity celebrates the rebirth of the sun – the source of light and life for all humanity – on New Year’s Day!
For me, each day that marks a change of season through the natural cycles of the year is a time to celebrate. These special days inspire me to reflect on an attribute or quality of the season, and how it affects my life. The pattern of light and dark shifting through the year may trigger thoughts of how strongly the qualities of the divine masculine and divine feminine are apparent in my life, and often, it reminds me to consider how well I am balancing those qualities.
"And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been." ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
I invite you to celebrate with me the role of Eve (the mother of all humanity) on New Year’s Eve (the evening before the special day that marks the rebirth of the sun, humanity’s source of light and life).
On this special evening I cannot help but contemplate where I am - on the cusp of the year behind and the year ahead. I am reflecting on my past actions, words, and thoughts, and setting intentions for my future actions, words, and thoughts. I am releasing the past, welcoming the future, and wholly embracing the present moment.
Specifically, on this evening my thoughts seem to be focused on gratitude and generosity - which are expressions of the divine feminine and the divine masculine: one is centered in receiving, the other in giving.
