Earth Angels
May 27, 2024
“My mother used to say that the primary responsibility of a woman is to take care of her children and to take care of her home… and she was absolutely right… We have to take care of our children; not only our own children, but children everywhere. And we need to take care of our home; not only our own home, but the home we all share - the earth itself."
Marianne Williamson
May is a favorite month and I hope you've been enjoying it! On this Memorial Day in the U.S., we honor military personnel who died in the line of duty. Because I believe that the highest form a memorial service can take is a celebration of life, today on my walk I will celebrate the lives of all those through whose dedication and sacrifices this country has been blessed with opportunities and freedoms rarely found elsewhere. May they and their loved ones receive blessings of divine love, spirituality, abundance, and peace.
Similarly, I celebrated the first of May by taking a long, lovely walk in nature. To me there is no place more sacred than nature's cathedral; it is where I feel most strongly connected to the divine. On Mother's day I gave a talk at church honoring the mother we all share - Mother Earth. My inspiration came from a talk I attended years ago featuring Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love, during which she shared something her mother used to say (see the opening quotation above).
In considering ways to honor Mother Earth, the best resource I know is a memoir by Dorothy Maclean, To Hear the Angels Sing. In it she relates her experiences of co-founding the Findhorn community in Scotland – experiences that led to communication with the devic kingdom, which she described as ”the angels, great Beings whose lives infuse and create all of Nature.”
It all began in 1962 when Dorothy and two other people, a married couple with whom she shared a common path of spiritual growth, found themselves unemployed and living in a trailer park on Findhorn Bay. To supplement their food supply, they cultivated a small garden – no easy task on sand dunes in which only gorse and coarse grass grew. Then, while meditating early in May, Dorothy received a directive from within:
“One of the jobs for you…is to sense the Nature forces…perceive their essences and harmonize with them… All forces are to be felt into, even the sun, the moon, the sea, the trees, the very grass.”
Dorothy’s first communication from the angels, or devas, began a few weeks later during another meditation, and a day-by-day unfoldment in communication began with these angels of the earth. Dorothy and her friends followed the devas' advice, and eventually all the land surrounding the trailer was under cultivation with a fine supply of vegetables, including surpluses to sell to local markets. Soil samples were tested; results showed the soil was perfectly balanced.
Dorothy related, "It was the reality of the garden growth that brought home to us the reality of the devas. Out of this grew a new way of gardening, and a deeper understanding of life as a whole. We were learning the importance of cooperation, not only with Nature but amongst ourselves as well.”
Word spread of the garden’s success and the group grew into a community when visitors, attracted by their way of life, joined them. They were urged by the devas to experiment, to use their innate creativity, and to find answers from within. And the communications were not limited to the subject of gardening:
"We devas would like to dance around in the consciousness of every human being to wake you up to what you are... We would have you know that you are light beings... We see man becoming alive to his light and linking with humans and with the mineral, vegetable and animal worlds. This is the time of linking, with love, to the light that is everywhere."
Dorothy communicated with many devas: a landscape angel, devas of trees and of nearby mountains, an angel of stone and another of sound, the spirit of the wind and one of the night, a sun being, and even the spirit of Findhorn. They told Dorothy that humans who love nature often enter into the devas' world without knowing it:
"Humans often touch into our worlds...and we are always delighted because here you are free and closer to your real selves."
Dorothy noted: "When a beautiful sunset makes us catch our breaths, when the form or scent or colour of a flower humbles us, when we are so enthralled in some action that we lose all sense of time and place, when a smile touches our hearts, when the forest stills us to peace, when music moves us to rapture, when we really love, or laugh or dance with joy, we are one with the angels.”
The devas even alluded to a song of the earth that I hope will inspire you as it did me:
"Now, as never before, great Cosmic Angels are reaching to touch the Earth in gentleness and beauty... All creation sings its song of joy and you hear it... as Nature greets the new day... Glory in it, open to it, and give thanks for it. It is God's hand reaching you from this amazing universe... From space, from all around, unbelievable beauty is coming to you. Open yourself and meet it for it is to be."
I hope you will take some time to celebrate life today and every day. And I hope you'll share with me the ways that you connect with these angels of the earth - please let me know what inspirations they bring to you!
