Dog Food, Mmmm Mmm

July 20, 2014

"Feelings or emotions are the universal language and are to be honored. They are the authentic expression of who you are at your deepest place."

Judith Wright, Australian poet and environmentalist
I have been eating my own dog food for a couple of months now, and it tastes pretty good…. As an intuitive life coach, I am in the business of getting to the heart of a matter and perceiving key strategies to help my clients achieve meaningful goals. Insights flow into my awareness and pour out of me. However, when dealing with my own issues, it’s not always so easy. Sometimes I cannot be objective about the core issue. I second-guess myself or overanalyze the situation. Or I’m too mad (or stubborn, or confused, or hurt) to take action. Take the past two months: I’ve been helping my two adult children, who sustained fairly serious injuries within two days of each other (my daughter, a torn ligament on her knee, and my son, a stress fracture to his rib). Both are recovering just fine, and I’ve been able to stay strong and centered - providing support where needed while encouraging them to remain independent and confident of their abilities to manage their own lives. That is, I've been strong and centered on the outside.
On the inside, I’ve been unbalanced and highly emotional in this new-to-me support role that is more verbal than active. I’ve been grieving my empty nest all over again. I’ve been my own worst coaching client: worrying, ignoring my hunches, neglecting my self-care - I’ve even neglected tasks that I love, like keeping in touch with all of you.
My saving grace has been that I’ve known enough to ask for outside help: another coach, an energy worker, a fellow medium, a colleague who knows me well, a friend with a great ear for listening, family members near and far, and my helpers in the spirit realms (who have been working overtime). I am grateful to have such a strong community of professional colleagues and spiritual advisors to support me.
Ask for help. It’s a simple solution. It’s what I tell my clients and friends. It’s the aforementioned dog food - tastes good, satisfies my hunger, nourishes my soul. Oh, and it’s easy to prepare on evenings when I’m too tired to cook.
Now, let’s see what else is on the Inner Compass menu….
